When I was a small child, I voraciously read stories by the great Isaac Asimov, many of which featured a huge, all-knowing computer named "Multivac". Little did Isaac know that he predicted the data center based Internet of today!

Multivac was guarded heavily and was located in one place. In contrast, data centers are interspersed everywhere. The ability to colocate critical data in more than one place is even a security feature. What would the science fiction authors of the 50s and 60s think of our cloud based economies now, with so many ingress points for bad actors to enter?

Now, imagine a future where artificial intelligence governs the cyberspace, where virtual reality transcends physical limitations, and where data breaches pose a constant threat to our privacy. This futuristic vision is not merely a product of imaginative storytelling but a reflection of the very real challenges we face in today's digital age. In the realm of science fiction, many delve into these thought-provoking concepts, weaving narratives that explore the intricacies of internet safety, cybersecurity, and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence technology.

The beauty of science fiction lies in its ability to extrapolate current trends and technologies into speculative futures, allowing us to contemplate the potential consequences of our actions today. By exploring the intersection of science fiction and internet safety, we are challenged to think critically about the impact of technology on our lives and the measures we can take to protect ourselves in an increasingly interconnected world. For example, what if cars are hacked to cause accidents, or take drivers to unknown destinations for nefarious purposes? What if bodily implants could be hacked, to cause the wearer to commit crimes with no knowledge afterwards?

One fundamental tenant of science fiction I will never forget from a class I took is this - any technological advance can be used for both good and evil. Stay vigilant, as I can assure you the bad guys are spending their time figuring out how to leverage our giant leaps in technology.

Stay tuned for future book announcements as these ideas spin in my head.
